Sunspot

Change hurts. Hurt changes. Seven years ago, the Frozen Flame brought magic to Earth—but not to Dalton, who gained only scars. Now a lonely shut-in, “Ezzen” has resigned himself to an online life of secondhand magic, dabbling in magical theory and fanboying over the Spire and its superhuman Vaetna, the paragons of this new era. So when fate splinters and magic finds him, it’s the best day of his life—and the worst, as he suddenly becomes a resource in the cold war over control of magical power. From paramilitary organizations to Flame-worshipping cults to incandescent magical girls, the forces of the world sense the ripples and close in. Worse, his escape exposes the awful secret of the Flame, the thing quietly omitted from all the theory: that instead of the apotheosis he’s dreamt of, the reality of being a flamebearer is cruel and twisted, the bloody path of monsters. And some of those monsters are so very similar to the Vaetna he idolizes. Sunspot is a webserial about transformation, identity, and pain. It features a mix of slice-of-life drama with lifelike characters, political maneuvering in a rich alt-Earth setting, and covert magical warfare using a fleshed-out magic system. What to expect: - Inspirations: Katalepsis, The Wandering Inn, and sadly Worm. (also has Bioshifter vibes, allegedly, but I haven't read it) - Setting: Modern Earth that recently gained magic, leading to cold war over the handful of people capable of wielding it - Pacing: Slice-of-life pacing with a focus on character relationships in between apocalyptic magical disasters - Magic: Glyph-based magitech, body horror blood magic, and a dash of wuxia for flavor (blade combat and enhanced martial arts) - Girlcreatures: hyenagirls, androidgirls, dragongirls, mechgirls, buggirls? and more! - Trauma! - Close and complex emotional relationships (not a harem!) - Some NSFW content - Fat, juicy tails - Lots of food (for the tails) General content warnings: - Dysphoria - Gore (violent & medical) - Body horror - Kidnapping Additional CWs will be listed at the top of chapters when relevant. Sunspot also has its own website with: - Everything up to RR current chapter - Three weeks of advance chapters for Patreon subscribers - Glossary + Character Descriptions - Full quality commissioned artwork - FAQ - Fanworks - More to come!
